The CPU is very, very carefully placed into the Zero-Insertion-Force (ZIF) socket, with the lever raised. Here, CPU has been installed and the lever closed until it snaps into the locked position (it's to the right of the CPU). If you feel the slightest bit of resistance putting the chip into the socket, STOP and make sure the pins are straight and the lever is open.
